How To Get a Gig

How to get your first gig
So you’ve been taking music lessons for a while now on your chosen instrument and you feel that you are ready to go out there and show the world what you’ve been doing! Here’s how…
No matter what instrument or style of music you play, getting your first gig is about practicing, planning, and networking. You will want to start off by getting some practice of performing in front of an audience. A great place to start would be performing in Open Mics, Karaoke, Jam Sessions, and recitals. A variety of venues hold these events on a weekly basis, some free and some not. Some music schools, such as the Peggy Still School of Music, hold these events on a monthly basis for free. Check out the schedule of events page for dates and locations of these events so you can get involved. If you are a classical musician, it’s always a good idea to join an ensemble or if you attend a church ask the musical director if he or she could use an extra performer or singer. Another possibility would be to throw a recital for a benefit/fundraiser or for friends and family and get practice in that way.
